first_imgThe most surprising aspect of the selection was Aravind The most surprising aspect of the selection was Aravind getting a look-in as he has exactly not set the stage on fire after he was once selected for a ODI home series against England back in 2011. He was dropped after that series without even being played in a single match. During this years IPL, 31-year-old Aravind picked eight wickets in five matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore. In fact in the Karnataka Premier League, he went wicketless in four matches before getting three wickets for India A in the first one-day against Bangladesh. One aspect of Aravind is that he can also bowl left-arm spinners if the conditions dont suit his slow medium stuff. Asked about the selection of bowlers including Aravind, Patil said,”Looking ahead at the World T20, we wanted variation. We wanted to give opportunities to those who have done well in the domestic circuit, tri-series and A series. We wanted to give chance to those bowlers who have done well as we plan to pick the best for the World Cup.” On pacer Mohammed Shamis injury status, the chairman stated that the Bengal speedster is undergoing rehabilitation. “Shami is still undergoing rehab and he will join the camp tomorrow and then we will take a call. Roger Binny (selector) will be there at the camp. The selection committee is in touch with physio Patrick Farhart and we hope he recovers fast as we want him back in the team,” said Patil. Gurkeerats call up was a deserving one as the Punjab youngster recently scored an unbeaten 87 to win a tri-series final against Australia A. He followed that up with a half-century and a five wicket haul against Bangladesh A in the first of the three-match series. Gurkeerat has been a member of the Kings XI Punjab squad for past few years and his average of 47.55 in 39 List A matches in which he has scored 1379 runs is an impressive. His bowling has developed of late as 7 of his 10 List A scalps have come playing for India A. “The moment we looked at Gurkeerat, we looked at his all-round ability. We certainly want not one but more. Looking at the need of the hour and the current playing norms, we need to have more all-rounders. Gurkeerat has been performing for last two years. He has also played for India A and we have seen him performing. We are happy that he has made the cut into the Indian team,” said the hard-hitting batsman of yesteryears.
